I have a dual mono integrated amp with a tape loop, which means there are 'left' and 'right' in and out connections. Could you explain to an electronical dufus how to plug a simulator into this set up?
Do I need two single-ended, one for 'left' and 'right'?

How much do they cost?

I second beyond1000's post. I started with a regular Thingee with surge protection and then moved on to a BC6000si to which I have added a TPX120. Each move has been worth it. Would I find the max output of the CD player in the manual? I'm asking this because I have to look it up online.
